Starting in 1983 the National Bank of Austria (Österreichische Nationalbank) has introduced a new family of banknotes designed by Robert Kalina.

On 1st January 1999 the Euro (EUR) has replaced the Austrian Shilling (ATS) as the official currency of Austria at a fixed rate of 1 EUR = 13.7603 ATS.
